This paper examines the functions and flaws of existing microinsurance products available in Burkina Faso and their alignment with the needs of local SMEs. It further provides direct input into the ILO's initiative to develop a microinsurance best-practice manual for MFIs.

Microfinance institutions (MFIs) in the Philippines have created innovative mechanisms to address the financing needs of low-income families and entrepreneurs. Most recently, some MFIs have begun experimenting with microinsurance as means of reducing their clients’ vulnerability to a range of risks. To learn about these nascent activities, this study maps the microinsurance landscape and establishes knowledge on the regulatory framework for insurance in Philippines; identifies the details of microinsurance operations; and examine the demand for insurance by micro and small enterprises (MSEs).

Based on a survey of 275 clients of a microfinance institution (MFI) in Lusaka. Analyses the economic stresses to which low-income entrepreneurs are vulnerable, examines their coping strategies and assesses the potential demand for microinsurance and other risk-managing financial services such as savings and emergency loans. Discusses the implications for MFIs.
