So what is the Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value?

Every two years up to three innovative schemes related to water, nutrition or rural development are selected for the Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value. Creating Shared Value (CSV) encourages businesses to create economic and social value simultaneously by focusing on the social issues that they are uniquely capable of addressing.

Through the Prize, we want to encourage and help innovative, commercially viable, and high-impact initiatives achieve scale and financial sustainability.

The winner is selected by the Nestlé CSV Advisory Board and benefits from an investment of up to CHF 500,000 (approx. USD 530,000) to scale up or replicate its project. At the same time, we also learn from the innovations and models employed by the winning organisation.

This year’s results were slightly different. We awarded the Prize to one overall winner and two runners up.

Our winner is Fundación Paraguaya de Cooperación y Desarrollo for its ‘self-sufficient agricultural school’ project which aims to boost education and entrepreneurship for young people living in rural Paraguay. These schools ensure students receive technical and business training on top of their normal academic curriculum, giving them the kind of education they need to find good jobs or create their own businesses.

Income to cover the school’s expenses and to ensure the school’s long-term financial viability in ensured by on-campus small enterprises, which also give students the opportunity to learn technical and business skills in a hands-on way.

Our runners up include a non-profit organisation based in Lebanon called arcenciel. It is helping farmers and small food-processing business owners in the country to produce and market a diversity of fresh and processed products in an environmentally friendly, socially responsible and economically viable way.

Another runner up is Excellent Development, a non-profit organisation based in the United Kingdom. With local partners, it helps farmers and their families in Kenya, Zimbabwe, Mozambique and Uganda to gain access to clean water through the construction of sand dams. Complementing this, they train communities in soil and water conservation activities and climate-smart agricultural techniques.

Our Nestlé CSV Prize is open to individuals, private businesses, not-for-profit organisations, governmental and inter-governmental organisations and academic institutions.

We have now opened the call for nominations for the 2014 Nestlé Prize in Creating Shared Value until 31st March 2013. For more information visit: www.nestle.com/CSV/CSVPrize or email us at CSVPrize@nestle.com.
