Impacts wheel – illustrating the ripple effect of inclusive business support

The results stemming from support to an inclusive business venture from the Business Innovation Facility ripple through the business, the base of pyramid market, and ideally through the sector and out to other inclusive business practitioners.

These ripples are dynamic and unpredictable, varying greatly across projects.  At the risk of simplification, we illustrate them in this results wheel.

To further understand the different types of results shown in this wheel, see a blog on BIF predicted impacts, here.

What can’t be shown in just a diagram is the complex causal links between one element and another.    Some people prefer to understand this as a chain of logic, and indeed in the Facility we are increasingly using a ‘results chain’ to depict causal links at each project.   See the standard BIF Results Chain here, and a blog about the value of results chains in Malawi, by Karen Smith (Country Manager).

The diagram shows how impact multiples as others take up the business model, lessons learned or adapt their investment decisions in the related sectors.   But a static diagram  cannot show expansion of the central circles over time, as the business prospers and goes to scale. From the point of view of the entrepreneur, that is the route to scale.
