Last week ICCO cooperation launched the online Agri-Business Innovation Challenge platform. Entrepreneurs, startups, experts and professionals from around the world are invited to co-create agribusiness solutions that improve the livelihood of smallholder farmers in Uganda. Agriculture is the lifeblood of African economies and societies. In Uganda, 74% of the working population is active within the agricultural sector. Almost 75% of the total agricultural production in Uganda is generated by smallholder farmers, who farm on small plots of land of less than 2ha. The financial situation of smallholder farmers is fragile, which cuts them off from access to quality inputs (e.g. seeds and fertilizer), tools, training, credit and markets that are necessary to innovate and lead a viable business.

The ICCO Agri-Business Challenge calls for business solutions that create a positive change in the working situation of smallholder farmers in Uganda. Winning business solutions help to improve the profitability and livelihoods of smallholder farmers. Participants are able to submit their business proposals till July 31st on www.abc.co.ug. During the challenge all ideas are enriched with the help of experts. The most promising submissions will be rewarded with money prizes up to 20,000 euro. Plus, the winner will receive a tailor-made business development support from the ICCO Agri-business Booster (AbB) for 3-6 months, to be valued at up to 15% ICCO equity in the business.
