The Kingdom of Netherlands Embassy in Kenya held a workshop on ‘Enhancing effective and proactive partnerships in the food production value chain’ on 24th October 2017 at the Royal Orchid. The event brought together Dutch Partners and players in Agriculture and Food Security value chain drawn from Kenya and Netherlands including; farmers, research institutions, Ministry of Agriculture, NGOs and the Private Sector. KEPSA was well represented by the Sustainable Inclusive Business (SIB) Team.

The objective of the workshop was to address; inclusivity, food safety and scalability.  Contributing to the Business case for Inclusivity in Food Security, the SIB team highlighted the principles of Inclusive Business Models in food security, best practices and the drivers for these models.  Indeed, Inclusive Business in the Agriculture Sector has a role to play in enhancing food security through provision of affordable credit to farmers, opening up markets, sharing information to farmers and the markets, Innovating for the Smallholder farmers, among others. The SIB team also talked about successful Inclusive Business models and their importance quoting a recent research that they conducted together with BCtA.  Llyord Gitau from the SIB Kenya team took members through the presentation which prompted questions and candid discussions from the attendees on challenges faced by those working with smallholder farmers on Inclusive Business.

Mr. Jan Ubels from the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) Lab made a presentation on scaling Inclusive Business models. The presentation focused on the different types of scaling, barriers to scaling and how the Inclusive Businesses can overcome these barriers.  The workshop culminated in two breakout sessions that focused in-depth through experiences on scalability and Inclusivity.
