Northern Ghana Shea is a Social Enterprise, operating in the Upper West region of Ghana, with equal focus on profit, people and planet. The crucial role of shea nut and shea butter in local economic development especially for women in the Upper West region cannot be over-emphasized. As a result, Concern Universal (now “United Purpose Gh.”) promoted the northern Ghana Shea Project in 2012 to provide a range of capacity building and market linkage support for women shea nut pickers and butter processors as part of its Agricultural Livelihoods Programme.

Inclusive Business Model

Currently NGS is working with over 1,000 women where about 50% are involved in shea butter processing whilst shea nut is supplied for processing by all the women. These women are located in more than 10 communities within 4 districts.

Impact

NGS creates a more sustainable avenue for economic empowerment for rural women in northern Ghana through wealth creation and employment generations; and to sustain the gains made during the project phase.
