This research study was conducted as part of a series of country-specific baseline assessments to provide a broad overview of the production, market and socioeconomic conditions, and the constraints and opportunities in farming systems. In Malawi, the main legumes of interest are groundnut and pigeonpea; consequently, much of the analysis in this paper focuses on the two crops, while also providing a broad picture about other crops and livelihood strategies.

This case study showcases alcoholic beverages company, SABMiller, which joined the Business Call to Action with an initiative to develop and improve local supply chains for barley, a key ingredient for the company’s products, in Rajasthan, India. It outlines the company's goals which include establishing centres throughout key barley-growing regions to provide farmers with certified seeds, agricultural skills training, and technical assistance; and it outlines how the business model works; the business and development impacts to date; and the key success factors.

This case study focuses on Begeli Ltd, a Georgian commercial company, which sells and promotes local organic products and its founder, the Fruit and Vegetable Ltd and Biological Farming Association Elkana, a Georgian non-governmental organization. Begeli serves as a direct marketing and distribution channel for Elkana members, helping them gain access to markets, get involved in more efficient supply chains, obtain knowledge of organic production and to enhance their revenue potential. The report describes the local background and context, the business model, market constraints and strategies, its relationships, achievements and challenges. and it gives a future outlook.
