This note illustrates how water, sanitation and hygiene 'WASH' service provision can be approached in a way that fosters inclusion, promotes equality, and places the concerns of women and girls at the centre of programme planning and implementation. It outlines the example of establishing communal sanitation facilities in Maputo (Mozambique) and Naivasha (Kenya).

This report investigates the demand for toilets in rural India, and the availability of quality and affordable products as well as financing for unlocking this demand. It proposes sanitation business models that could profitably deliver solutions that meet customer needs, and it highlights players in the sanitation ecosystem who could serve as the “market maker,” conducting market-building activities and creating an enabling environment for growth. It is a project output of 3SI, a 5-year project supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation which aimed to develop scalable private-sector business models for the local sanitation market.

This study applies a base-of-the-pyramid impact assessment (BoP IA) framework to an enterprise providing sanitation services to urban slums in Kenya, with a focus on its poverty-alleviation impacts on children five years old and under. The analysis shows that assessing changes across multiple dimensions of poverty, including capability, economics, and relationship well-being, improves understanding of the effectiveness of a sanitation intervention.
