This case study focuses on L’Occitane’s involvement with the shea sector in Burkina Faso. The report explores the inclusive business model of L’Occitane, which includes the sourcing of shea butter from rural cooperatives and the provision of capacity development for the supplying communities. The study presents constraints and the solutions adopted by the company in Burkina Faso as well as its results, including economic, social and environmental impacts.

This study sought to enable SNV-Zimbabwe identify and understand the groundnuts value chain dynamics regarding actors (from farmers to firms), channels, markets trends, viability and production and consumption trends. 

Such an understanding would inform SNV’s overall exploration of ways to support groundnuts production and productivity through, inter alia, enhancing private sector participation and increasing the number of smallholder farmers pursuing groundnuts production on a commercial basis under the RARP CSF Oilseeds component and for the benefit of other agencies and actors who wish to intervene in this sub-sector.

Research Paper #21 assesses the risk mitigation capacity of weather index-based insurance for cotton growers in Northern Cameroon. It finds that weather index-based insurance is associated with huge basis risk and thus has limited potential for income smoothing. The authors use a tractable definition of basis risk to show that calibrating parameters in sub-regions allows to reduce dramatically basis risk and to avoid non negligible balancing out between distinct geographical zones.

This study aims to deepen our understanding of the range of possibilities available for engaging the private sector in food security and improved nutrition at the Base of the Pyramid (“BoP”), be it via smallholders, entrepreneurs, or the actual consumers of food and food products. In this context five different business interventions for BoP ventures were identified that achieve social impact, financial sustainability and, potentially scale. Key challenges and lessons are presented with respect to barriers to growth, the scaling of processes, objectives and adequate business models. The study is based on the analysis of 16 cases and expert interviews.

Microinsurance Paper #17 presents lessons from IFFCO-TOKIO's implementation of a livestock insurance product using radio-frequency identification technology. It outlines how IFFCO-TOKIO improved value for clients through new business processes. The case shows that if administered carefully, livestock insurance has the potential to be viable with scale.

This case study looks at the CARE Bangladesh owned Krishi Utsho micro-franchise model - a system of stores, all linked by a common brand but owned by individuals, which sell products like cattle feed, seeds or veterinary medicines to farmers. It outlines how the model works; the opportunities and challenges; and the development impacts to date.

This case study looks at the camel milk sector and the development of an initiative which sought to strengthen women’s organisations and enterprises; foster market linkages and private sector involvement within the sector; promote efficient use of technologies; develop and disseminate knowledge for replication of good practices in-country; and contribute to a policy environment that is conducive to the commercialisation of camel milk.
