Katharina Münster

Katharina supports the Communication and Digital Innovation agenda of iBAN. Prior to joining iBAN, she gained working experience in development cooperation, public communications, and academia. Among others, she worked as a student assistant for the Asia-Pacific Research and Advice Network, drafted country reports for the Myanmar Representative Office of the Konrad-Adenauer-Foundation, and supported public outreach activities of the GIZ Programme for Sustainable Agricultural Supply Chains and Standards. Katharina holds a master’s degree in International Relations from the Free University of Berlin, the Humboldt University of Berlin, and Potsdam University. In addition, she studied abroad at Sciences Po Lyon and the University of Reading, UK.

2.5 billion people in the developing world lack access to hygienic sanitation and clean water. Sanergy is a social enterprise based in Nairobi - Kenya where 8 million people in the informal settlements lack proper sanitation. We tackle the sanitation challenge using an innovative systems based approach. We build a dense network of low cost, high quality sanitation units called Fresh Life Toilets, we then franchise them out into the community through micro-entrepreneurs who run them as viable businesses, we then collect the waste and convert it into by-products such as organic fertiliser.

We are always listening to the communities that we serve to ensure that they have the best sanitation experience. This also helps to our entrepreneurs generate as much customer demand as possible. Armed with tonnes of feedback from the end-users we now have a new look Fresh Life Toilet!

We are currently testing 10 of the new Fresh Life Toilets in diverse settings throughout the community. The Fresh Life operators running these toilets are giving regular feedback on their experiences as well as what the end-user thinks about the modifications we have made.
