Many countries are pursuing government-sponsored health insurance as a primary path towards universal health coverage. In these same countries, there are private health microinsurance schemes sponsored by community-based organizations, commercial insurance companies, or other institutions. In Briefing Note #20, the Facility explores the hypothesis that government-sponsored initiatives should collaborate with private actors to accelerate the expansion of health insurance to informal workers and their families. 

This report discusses the contribution of business to realising the Post-2015 agenda to eradicate extreme poverty. Through case examples, it illustrates the potential of cross-sector partnerships to advance both business impact and development outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa. It provides five recommendations on how the Post-2015 process can help to promote and establish the architecture for a greater number, scale, and effectiveness of cross-sector partnerships.

This working paper reviews and gives structure to the theme of donor partnerships with business that are aimed at private sector development. It discusses and proposes a focus on three key issues: assessing additionality; measuring partnership results; and achieving better outcomes based on learning from experience.

This report reveals that the use of partnering by large companies, in particular, seems to be widespread to achieve inclusive business objectives. It is based on 15 large companies in the Business Innovation Facility pilot and reviews their different types of partnerships used, why they are created, and where they occur in the value chains.

This report maps informal settlements in Metro Manila, looks at construction at the base of the pyramid, including characteristics of housing categories and types of house construction. It reviews the case of Quezon City, where a large number of informal settlers are being moved to formal housing by the government and the role of community mortgage programs and public private partnerships in this transition.

This report draws on a qualitative study of youth microfranchising in the Tanzanian computer sales, service, and training sector, and identifies the challenges and advantages of a team-based approach to owning and operating a microfranchise business in the context of a developing country.
