This Discussion Paper provides examples of how a systems approach can be applied at a city level by looking at two cities – Lusaka, Zambia and Maputo, Mozambique – that have experienced positive change in their on-site sanitation sector over the last decade.

Case study on Belle Verte, an ecoinclusive enterprise, which provides innovative waste management solutions and raises awareness on the problem of increased waste in Mauritius. 

Case study on WASHKing. The company aims to eradicate open defecation and poor sanitation in low-income urban communities in Accra, Ghana. To achieve this, WASHKing designs, supplies and installs affordable, eco-friendly bio digester toilets in poor urban households. 

P2P business models like Airbnb or Uber provide an organised way to collectively share certain resources. Could similar solutions reduce the barriers to sharing of the limited existing sanitation facilities in low income countries? During 2016 and 2017 Inclusive Business Sweden and Aqua for All, supported by Unilever and funded by Transform, carried out a project named ‘Peer-to-peer Business Models to Meet Sanitation Needs’ to explore this possibility.

This case study traces Evidence Action from origin to the launch and expansion of Dispensers for Safe Water in Uganda. It first describes the Dispensers’ pilot in eastern Uganda and then explore Evidence Action’s process of preparing for and scaling Dispensers across Uganda.

This case study assesses the business model and the social, environmental and economic impact of EcoPost, a Kenyan plastic recycling enterprise that produces eco-friendly fences and construction material.

This note illustrates how water, sanitation and hygiene 'WASH' service provision can be approached in a way that fosters inclusion, promotes equality, and places the concerns of women and girls at the centre of programme planning and implementation. It outlines the example of establishing communal sanitation facilities in Maputo (Mozambique) and Naivasha (Kenya).

This project profile showcases IAP grantee Sanergy which takes a systems-based approach to make hygienic sanitation accessible, affordable and sustainable by building out the entire sanitation chain offering potable toilets for urban informal settlements with regular waste collection and waste processing.

This case study showcases SEED 2010 award winner Mooi River Waste, a South African based enterprise that is normalising the workforce of informal waste pickers, providing a safer source of income and employment and increasing the rate of recycling in the area. The study outlines the local development challenges and the highlighted solution; the development impact and reach; and the success factors and challenges in building the inclusive eco-enterprise.
